The Dangers of Vaping – A National Institute of Health Study
Recently I heard a podcast where the host spoke about the dangers of vaping while driving. He compared the act to smoking cigarettes and implied that vaporizers are as bad as smoking marijuana. That is an extreme view that is shared by many, but I would like to present the reality on the matter.
To begin with, it’s important to understand that vaporizers usually do not contain any harmful chemical compounds while they’re in use. Much like any type of tobacco use, tobacco and its ingredient tar in e-cigarette materials are harmful to your health. But what about vaporizers containing nicotine? Nicotine is still dangerous to your health and should be avoided no matter what.
So how can vaporizers that contain nicotine be in comparison to e-books and other electronic cigarette products? Well, nicotine continues to be delivered into the body through the skin, which explains why vaporizers are this type of problem. Nicotine gets absorbed through the liner of the lungs into the bloodstream, causing short-term respiratory problems including coughing and wheezing. Long run, it can result in conditions that affect the center, including clogged arteries and stroke.
In contrast, there has been hardly any research on the dangers of vaporing in comparison to smoking. Also, e-cigarettes contain higher levels of tar and more harmful chemicals than ever before. We know that tar is carcinogenic; now we know that it’s a lot more toxic in mixtures than it really is alone. Tar and other chemicals can cause cancers, not just nicotine poisoning.

You should also know that a lot of research has been done on what E-Cigarette vapors affect the heart. Researchers can see that smokers who were exposed to high concentrations of nicotine over prolonged periods of time developed cardiovascular problems such as atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries. E-Cigarettes usually do not release nicotine straight into the blood stream like combustible cigarettes do, therefore the build up of chemicals within your body won’t directly harm you. However, the chemicals made by constant E-Cigarette smoking is extremely dangerous. Studies have shown that long-term E-Cigarette smoking can result in degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and cause chemical imbalances in the mind.
According to the FDA, electronic cigarettes shouldn’t be marketed to children under the age of 18. Google scholar is a wonderful source for the most recent medical research with this topic. These laws were recently passed by Congress and have yet to be overturned by the Bush administration. There have been conflicting studies on the dangers of E-Cigarette smoking. Most doctors agree that electronic cigarettes shouldn’t be distributed around people unless they’re harmed and possibly killed.
Another study performed by the American Cancer Society discovered that some electric cigarettes contain flavorings that could affect a person’s capability to properly discern whether or not they are smoking. Google scholar has published a thorough, peer reviewed amicus curiae on the dangers of E-Cigarette flavourings. The amicus curiae was written by three top researchers from the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association, and the American Psychological Association. The amicus curiae indicates that there is “an emerging body of research suggesting that the flavours of electronic cigarettes may contribute to the increase in cancer risk for smokers.” One of the flavoring ingredients is menthol, which has been proven to be extremely addicting, especially when an individual goes cold turkey and starts inhaling again.
Among the things the amicus indicates is these studies are mostly observational in nature and that they are not designed to determine if these claims are in fact true. This is contrary to statements created by the CDC, FDA, and several other national institutes who continue steadily to promote the idea that electronic cigarettes are dangerous due to flavourings they contain.
